Glass expert Melanie Ashoff makes pretty suncatchers from cut-glass pieces and pressed flowers. Materials:
Pressed flowers and greenery 1/8" flat glass 1/8" beveled glass Copper foil stripping Scissors Pencil or golf tee Small brass ring Industrial-strength adhesive for glass (E6000B. multipurpose adhesive) - Have a piece of 1/8" flat glass and a piece of 1/8" beveled glass cut to the same outer dimensions. The beveled glass will be placed on top of the flat glass. Make sure both pieces are clean.
- Place the flat glass on your work surface. Position pressed flowers and greenery on top of the glass, making sure to stay inside the frame of the bevel. Check by placing the beveled glass on top (figure A).
- Once the arrangement is made, carefully place the beveled glass piece on top, being careful not to disturb the flowers.
- Peel the backing from the copper foil (figure B). Starting at the bottom of the glass, center the copper-foil strip along the edge of the two glass pieces. Press it against the glass edges. Wrap the copper foil all the way around and trim with scissors, overlapping the ends slightly (figure C).
- Run the wooden side of a pencil or a golf tee over the foil to smooth out any wrinkles and seal the foil tightly to the glass (figure D).
- Glue a small brass ring for hanging to the top of the flat glass piece with an industrial-strength adhesive such as E6000 (figure E).
Tips: - Purchase pressed flowers from a craft store, or make your own by pressing flowers in a heavy book.
- There's no need to glue the flowers in place. The glass pieces will hold them.
- If desired, you may solder the glass pieces together with copper glass caning, available in glass stores.
