    Wine, Bleach and Dye Stamping

Fabric dye, bleach and even wine can turn a boring T-shirt into a distinctive piece of wearable art.

Wine Dyed, Bleach and Dye Stamped T-Shirts
    Wine Dyeing

    Materials:

    1 bottle cheap red wine
    large bowl or basin
    washed T-shirt
    vinyl gloves

    1. Pour the wine into a bowl or basin (figure A).

    2. Wearing vinyl gloves, dunk the T-shirt into the wine bath (figure B). For a tie-dyed effect, cinch the shirt with rubber bands before dunking; soak the fabric in the bath for 30 minutes.

    3. After 30 minutes, wring out the shirt, wash and dry.

    Dye Stamping

    Materials:

    cold-water permanent fabric dye
    water
    flour
    cookie cutters
    pale T-shirt (prewashed)
piece of cardboard or an old magazine

    1. Place cardboard/magazine inside the T-shirt to prevent the dye from penetrating to the other side of the fabric.

    2. Add two Tbsp. cold-water dye powder to a small bowl. Add one Tbsp. flour to the water. Gradually add spoonfuls of water, stirring after each spoonful until a paste the consistency of a thick pudding forms (figure C).

    3. Dip a cookie cutter in the dye paste and press it on the T-shirt. Continue with additional stamps to create the pattern of choice (figure D).

    4. Use a small paintbrush to paint the paste inside the pattern outline for a solid effect (figure E).

    5. Let the dye set up for approximately 30 minutes. Wash and dry the T-shirt before wearing.

    Bleach Gel Stamping

    Materials:

    bleach-based automatic dishwasher gel
    medium-hued T-shirt (prewashed)
piece of cardboard or an old magazine
    small plate

    1. Place cardboard inside the T-shirt to prevent the dye from bleeding to the other side of the fabric.

    2. Squirt dishwashing gel onto a plate (figure F).

    3. Dip a cookie cutter in the gel and press onto the T-shirt (figure G) (figure H).

    4. The bleach will bleed into the fibers; let it set for 30 minutes, then wash immediately to deactivate the bleach (figure I).
