A silver-leaf mirror with the look of an antique adds elegance to just about any decorating scheme.

    Materials:

    Gelatin
    Water
    Saucepan
    Spoon
    Silver leaf
    Antique picture frame
Clear glass to fit the picture frame
    Foam brushes
    Black acrylic paint

    1. Mix 2 tablespoons gelatin with 1 cup water in a saucepan. Stir over heat until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature.

    2. Start with clean glass. Brush the gelatin mixture onto the glass with a foam brush, using even strokes in one direction, from top to bottom (figure A).

    3. While the gelatin is wet, place a sheet of silver leaf over the glass. Cover the entire piece of glass with sheets of silver leaf, overlapping slightly as each sheet is added (figure B).

    4. Using a dry foam brush, gently press the silver leaf onto the glass (figure C).

    5. Turn the glass over, and brush a coat of black acrylic paint onto the back of the glass with a foam brush. Let the paint dry (figure D).

    6. Place the glass in an antique frame with the silver-leaf side facing out.
