Vesta Abel of Comotion Rubber Stamps® turns purchased candles into works of art by rubber-stamping images into the wax and adding an antique finish with metallic ink.

    Materials:

    Candles--square, chunky or pillar candles
    Rubber stamps
Decor-It® inks in aqua, purple and copper
    Heat tool
    Makeup-sponge wedges
    Newspaper
    Paper towels
    Paper plate
    Latex gloves

    1. Cover your work surface with newspaper. Wear latex gloves.

    2. Fold a paper towel and place a candle on top of it to catch melted wax and to prevent the candle from rolling.

    3. Heat an isolated area on the candle with a heat tool until the wax begins to liquefy. Let the wax cool slightly. Once the wax looks cloudy, press the stamp into the melted wax. Hold for a few seconds. Repeat on other areas of the candle (figure A).

    4. Squeeze a little of each color of Decor-It ink onto a paper plate.

    5. Using a makeup sponge, apply aqua ink lightly to the stamped areas. Add purple ink in the same manner. Finish by sponging on metallic ink (figure B).
    Tips:

    • To clean waxy residue from a rubber stamp, heat the stamp with a heat gun, then blot off the wax with a paper towel. The heat gun should not affect the rubber.

    • When working with a round candle, place it on a bunched-up paper towel to prevent the candle from rolling around on your work surface. Roll the stamp across a round candle after heating the wax to impress the image (figure C).
