Were off to the races: Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza have the inside track on some fast-paced craft ideas. They design horseracing-themed shadow boxes that take the blue ribbon, add a bit of grandstand glamour with embellished hats perfect for the derby, and head to the winners circle for a mint julep recipe thats instilled with tradition.
Derby Shadow BoxShow off your favorite souvenirs with a shadow box that will make any collector proud.
Materials: 12"x12" shadow box 14"x14" linen fabric foamcore board glue gun various cardstocks and scrapbook papers corner punch paper crimper double-sided tape adhesive foam squares scissors magnetic paper-embossing kit hammer dye-based inkpads pencil decorative-edged scissors derby pins derby tickets derby-themed magazine clippings or photographs chalk pastels paper towel 1-1/2"-wide grosgrain ribbon1. Cut a piece of foamcore board slightly smaller than the inside of the shadow box. Place the linen fabric, right side down, on the work surface. Center the board on top of the fabric. Beginning with the corners, wrap the fabric around the board and secure with hot glue (figure A).
2. Create a title for the box, print it on a piece of cardstock and cut to size. Using a decorative corner punch, punch the corners of the title card. Run a piece of complementary scrapbook paper through a paper crimper. Layer the title card on top of the crimped paper, attach with adhesive foam squares and cut out center to form a frame (figure B). Attach the frame to the front of the board with adhesive foam squares.
3. Use a magnetic paper-embossing kit to emboss the words win, place and show on a piece of cardstock (figure C). Run a dye-based inkpad across the front of each word to make the lettering stand out (the ink will bleed, so use only a small amount). Cut out each word and set the pieces aside (figure D).
4. Arrange the tickets and attach them together with double-sided tape. Trace the outline of the tickets on a piece of cardstock, adding approximately 1/4" extra space around all edges; this will act as a frame for the tickets. Cut the cardstock frame out with decorative-edged scissors (figure E). Attach the tickets to the frame with double-sided tape; attach the frame to the board with adhesive foam squares.5. Cut out three images of galloping horses, each slightly larger than the next. Position these across the bottom portion of the board with the smallest horse on the left and the largest horse on the right. Attach the smallest horse with double-sided tape. Attach the medium horse with one layer of adhesive foam squares; attach the largest horse with two layers of adhesive foam squares. You can also add a trophy image to the area with double-sided tape (figure F).
6. Black-and-white photos can be tinted with chalk pastels. Print out a black-and-white image on paper or cardstock; add color to one or two areas of the image. Blot excess chalk with a paper towel, being careful not to smudge the color. Chalk pastels produce bold, vibrant colors; use colored pencils for a softer look. Add the photo to the board with adhesive foam squares (figure G). 7. Attach derby pins to the ribbon, trim the end of the ribbon into an inverted V shape and position vertically on the left side of the board (figure H). Wrap the ribbon around the top of the board; secure it to the back of the board with a dot of hot glue.
8. Add the win, place and show titles next to the large, medium and small horse, respectively, using double-sided tape(figure I).9. Place the finished board inside the shadow box.
