Troops are painted with historically accurate colors whenever possible, but sometimes hobbyists can only make an educated guess as to which colors troops really used in battle.

In Steve Phenow's miniature gaming club, each member is a commander with troops to lead in battle.

The group engages in battle after research, intensive study and time-consuming construction. Many hobbyists are attracted to the hobby's historical aspects. To participate properly, Phenow says, hobbyists must sometimes become immersed in history and foreign languages.

Creating miniature battlefields is one of the most expensive hobbies that can be undertaken. Hobbyists must purchase material for boards, figures and paints, as well as reference materials. Phenow creates his own figures from molds, then ages them to make them look old.

Battlefields are created to scale, and during a battle each move is precisely measured. Cards and dice are used to determine who moves and how far. Battles present hobbyists with the same strategic choices to make, Phenow claims, with none of the imminent danger of actual battle.
