Whenever there's a damsel in distress or honor that must be defended, hobbyist Michael Jackson is ready to spring into action -- at least on weekends. That's when he joins with other members of the Society for Creative Anachronism to reenact the romance and chivalry of medieval lore. Although medieval life was hard for many, Jackson says he is intrigued by period's pageantry and valor. He sews his own costumes, as well as forging his own armor and weaponry. Jackson dons his armor twice weekly to practice for weekend battles and competitions (figure A), and he says the authenticity of costumes and armor is paramount: - A gambeson is quilted, protective clothing worn underneath armor for protection against nicks or pinches.
- The tabard is a short garment with open sides, worn on the outside of the armor. The tabard displays the coat-of-arms and protects the armor from the sun's heat.
- A full suit of armor would run about $100,000 today -- even in medieval times, only the wealthy could afford it. Lower versions of armor were also used, including chainmail and leather suits.
