Materials: Toilet-paper roll
Tape or glue
Scissors
Crayons, markers or paint and brushes (or all of them)
Construction paper
Waxed paper
Hole punch
- Punch a hole in the toilet-paper roll, as far in as the hole punch will reach (figure A).
- Cut a circle out of waxed paper (figure B) about 1" larger in diameter than tube. Glue or tape waxed paper over one end of tube (figure C). Do not cover the hole. Waxed paper should be taut and smooth with just a little play.
- Decorate.
- To play, hum into the open end of the toilet-paper roll, allowing a little air to blow from your mouth. Your breath makes the waxed paper vibrate, and the hole allows the air to escape.
Tip: No special tips -- just be creative and colorful when decorating. All products can be purchased at craft and all-purpose stores nationwide. No special products are needed. DIY Kids Fun Fact: The kazoo first appeared in other countries as early as the 17th century but didn't make it to our country until the mid-19th century.
