Materials: 2 small balloons Bowl Scissors 2 dowel rods: 10" x 1/2" Sandpaper All-purpose flour Newspaper Paint Hot glue Brushes Water Spray shellac Paper funnel Dried beans or rice Optional: Glitter, feathers and leather cord for decoration - Blow up two balloons. Try to make them the same size.
- Rip newspaper into small strips, about 1" by 3".
- Make papier-mC"chC) glue from equal amounts of water and flour (figure A). Example: 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup flour.
- Cover balloons with one layer of newspaper dipped in papier-mC"chC) glue (figure B). Leave tied balloon end exposed so you have something to hold onto as you work.
- Papier-mC"chC) tightly around the balloon tie. This will be where your handle is inserted -- you can cut paper away, but it is more difficult to add when you're finished. Let dry completely.
- Repeat process, adding at least two more layers. Let dry overnight.
- Pop balloons and remove them (figure C).
- Make a paper funnel and pour 1/2 to one cup of rice or beans into papier-mC"chC) shell.
- Cut dowel rod to length, about 10" for handle. Insert dowel rod into maracas to see how it fits. Trim opening larger if needed. Place bead of hot glue on end of dowel and insert into maraca so it touches the opposite side of the shell (figure D).
- Run a thick bead of hot glue around the base of the dowel where it goes into the shell.
- Lightly sand to a smooth finish and paint. Spray with shellac to seal.
Tips: - For best results when you papier-mC"chC), dip newspaper through glue mixture. Squeegee off most of the paste by running strip through your index and middle fingers. This will make for a smoother finish and shorter drying times.
- Place the balloon on a cup as you work so you can use both hands for the gluing process.
- Smooth the newspaper as you build your layers -- no creases or lumps.
